De Speeltoren en Kleine Kerk in Edam. Een gemeentelijke monumentengeschiedenis aan de hand van vier transformatiemomenten.

De aanbouw van de Speeltoren in Edam staat te koop. De gemeente Edam verkoopt dit thans ongebruikte onderdeel van het beeldbepalende gebouw om kosten te besparen. De Speeltoren en de Kleine kerk kennen een bewogen geschiedenis die in deze bijdrage aan de hand van vier transformatiemomenten wordt beschreven. Door de materiële kwetsbaarheid van dit unieke monument, die steeds tot nieuwe ingrepen noodzaakte, vormt de Kleine Kerk een zeer interessante casus om de ontwikkeling van de monumentenzorg in een kleine erfgoedgemeente te beschrijven.

The 'Speeltoren' and 'Kleine Kerk' in Edam (province of Noord-Holland). A local history of conservation policy illustrated by means of four moments of transformation.

By examining four key moments of transformation in the history of the Edam church tower, crucial shifts in local conservation policies of a small monumental town are revealed. On the brink of the 19th century, the ignorance leading to the demolition of the nave of the so-called Kleine Kerk ('Small Church') was replaced by a policy of active promotion of local conservation. This policy developed within the context of romantic voyages and the emergence of institutionalized national heritage management, but was also fostered by an active promoter and a lack of alternative perspectives. The contested protection of the view of the tower from the surroundings of the city in the late 1960s marked the end of the progressive policy. As it relied heavily on external expertise (notably the heritage organization Bond Heemschut) local ambitions proved vulnerable to shifts in the local balance of power. Consequently the local historical association 'Vereniging Oud Edam' claimed the rescue of the tower as proof of its reason for existence and continues to put the preservation of monuments on the political agenda.
