De Pingjumer Gulden Halsband; acht fasen van een Friese ringdijk.

De Pingjumer Gulden Halsband is een voormalige ringdijk in het westen van Friesland. Vanaf de 10e of 11e eeuw is er aan gebouwd om het terpdorp Pingjum en zes kleinere terpen te beschermen tegen de Marneslenk, een getijdengeul van de Zuiderzee. Dat lukte. Zelfs zo goed dat niet alleen het hoge water van de Zuiderzee werd gekeerd, maar tevens een groot deel van de Marneslenk kon worden ingepolderd. De dijkfunctie werd bijna een eeuw geleden definitief opgeheven. Geruisloos kwam daarmee een einde aan 900 jaar strijd tegen het water. Nu is het tijd om de ringdijk van Pingjum weer iets van haar oude glans terug te geven en enkele belangrijke facetten tut haar bewogen geschiedenis te benoemen.

The 'Pingjumer Gulden HaIsband'; eight phases in the life of a Frisian ring dike.

The Pingjumer Gulden Halsband is a former ring dike in the west of Friesland. From the 10th or 11th century onwards construction of the dike went on to protect the mound village of Pingjum and six smaller mounds from the Marneslenk, a tidal channel of the Zuiderzee. That worked so well that the dike did not only keep out the seawater, but also helped reclaim a large part of the Marneslenk. The dike lost its function as such during the first half of the 20th century. That way nine hundred years of struggle against the water quietly came to an end. Almost a century later it is time to restore some of the ringdike's old lustre and describe its turbulent history through its eight phases.
