Het dorp Broek in Waterland, gelegen in het veen ten noorden van Amsterdam, kent een opmerkelijke geschiedenis. Het verhaal van Broek is een verhaal over water en land, over wegen en vaarten, faam en bespotting, schepen en vee, oorlog en vereniging, bloei en teloorgang, maar bovenal het verhaal van een moeras, dat zich in de loop van de eeuwen ontwikkelde tot een hoog gewaardeerd monument.

From peat bog to protected area. Ten centuries of history of Broek in Waterland.

In this article the history of the village of Broek in Waterland, situated in the peat bogs just north of Amsterdam, was reconstructed on the basis of a series of newly drawn historical maps. Its historical development is quite remarkable. Just like many other villages in the peat bogs, it developed ribbon wise after the peat reclamations in the Middle Ages. Because of its location close to Amsterdam and its position in the system of waterways, its economy boomed in the early modern period. The village attracted many rich inhabitants and became a sight to visitors of the Dutch Republic. After a period of stagnation in the 19th century, it became one of the favourite spots for wealthy city dwellers seeking a tranquil environment again after the Second World War.
