Levenslijnen. Een verkenning van de cultuurhistorische betekenis van de infrastructuur in Zeeland.

Wegen over land en water zijn de levenslijnen van een samenleving. Ze zorgen voor nieuwe invloeden, ze brengen ontmoetingen en communicatie op gang. Behalve voor de economische ontwikkeling van een regio zijn ze daarom ook van belang voor het sociaal en cultureel leven. Aan de hand van de provincie Zeeland verken ik in dit artikel hoe het sociaal en cultureel leven in de vroegmoderne tijd werd beïnvloed door de weg- en waterverbindingen en hoe de technische verbetering van de infrastructuur daarop uitwerkte.

Cultural history and infrastructure in Zeeland.

In early modern times the different regions of the Dutch province of Zeeland were interconnected by a web of roads and waterways. Contrary to the assumption of some authors, the province was not an isolated area. The infrastructure highly contributed to cultural exchange and social diversity in Zeeland. According to modern standards, traffic two centuries ago must have moved agonizingly slowly. During the 20th century, modern roads, waterways and railways increased the scale and speed of traffic, the number of ways to reach the area, the means of communication and the mobility tremendously. The perception of distance and speed changed dramatically. Speed and predictability of means of transport became more important.
