Op steeds meer plaatsen keert de laatste jaren 'oud' water terug: water in havens en grachten die ooit werden gedempt. Zeeland liep daarbij niet voorop, Tijdens een studiemiddag in Middelburg werd geprobeerd daarin verandering te brengen. Tot welke plannen die ook mag leiden, eerst en vooral moet in kaart worden gebracht waar en in welke vorm vroeger water voorkwam in stad en dorp, en waarom dat water werd gedempt.

Where once was water. Why and where water disappeared from Zeeland's cities and villages.

During recent times, harbours and canals that for different reasons were filled up in the past have reappeared in several Dutch cities and villages. To encourage such initiatives in Zeeland, a seminar was held on this theme in 2012. First question: where did water once flow in Zeeland's cities and villages, and why did it disappear? Departing from an imaginary settlement, this question will be answered by successively discussing the village pond, the canal around the churchyard, the harbour and the harbour canal, the tidal basin, as well as the city canals and circular moats.
