Boshistorisch onderzoek in Nederland. Een evaluatie van recent onderzoek en methodische aandachtspunten voor de toekomst.

Met de toenemende belangstelling voor de erfgoedgeschiedenis is ook de interesse voor de historie van onze bossen in de laatste decennia sterk toegenomen. In de natuur- en landschapsbescherming is eveneens meer en meer het besef ontwaakt dat natuurgebieden en boslandschappen niet alleen een ecologische en esthetische waarde hebben, maar vaak ook een rijke geschiedenis van bezit en gebruik die zichtbaar is in bijzondere cultuurhistorische elementen. Boshistorisch onderzoek wordt zowel voor het beheer en beleid als voor wetenschappelijke of educatieve doeleinden verricht. De publicaties en projecten op dat terrein lopen sterk uiteen; van op een breed geïnteresseerd publiek gerichte boeken en artikelen tot grondige historische onderzoeken waarin ook de sociale, economische en juridische context van vroeger bosgebruik aan de orde komen.

Forest history in the Netherlands: an evaluation of recent research and methodological recommendations for the future

For this article firstly 40 recent publications and projects in the Netherlands and some in Flanders were evaluated. It appeared that for most publications a general historical approach was used, without a more fundamental historical analysis of the forest development. A shortcoming of many publications is also that no or scant use was made of archives. Secondly, the main approaches that are used nowadays in forest history are elaborated upon. Besides the general historical approach, historical ecology, landscape biography and historical geography are used as methodological frameworks for research. The author prefers the last approach as it offers the most comprehensive and useful perspective for the research of forest history. In conclusion some recommendations for the future are presented, the most important being: more attention for the methodological structure, a better use of archives and more attention for the social and economic aspects of historical ownership and use of forest.
