Delfshaven, vroeger direct aan de Maas gelegen, is nu totaal omringd door stedelijke bebouwing, waar het historische centrum moeilijk in is te herkennen. Delfshaven had de potentie om uit te groeien tot belangrijkste havenstad aan de Maas. Ontstaan als satellietstad van Delft, ging het echter gebukt onder een streng regime. De verzelfstandiging zorgde ook niet voor economische bloei, waardoor Delfshaven uiteindelijk geannexeerd werd door Rotterdam. Pas na de bombardementen op Rotterdam kwam er de aandacht die het historische centrum van Delfshaven verdient en werd het aangewezen als beschermd stadsgezicht. In dit artikel wordt de ruimtelijke groei van Delfshaven beschreven aan de hand van de economische en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen.

Delfshaven. From plaything to listed urban area

Delfshaven came into being in the 14th century as a satellite town of Delft. The town developed rapidly and soon the need for a second harbor arose. In the long run strict rules imposed by Delft seriously hampered further development of Delfshaven. Delft used the town only for its own profit. It obstructed developments that stimulated Delfshaven's economy, despite the fact that Delfshaven had the potential to become one of the most important port cities in the Maas area. In the 15th and 16th century development virtually came to a standstill. In the 17th century however, under the influence of the economic growth of the VOC the town expanded. The VOC-period was followed by a long period of administrative disorder and economic downfall. In this period the town became independent of Delft. Eventually, by the end of the 19th century, the poor economic situation led to the annexation of Delfshaven by Rotterdam. At the beginning of the 20th century many historical buildings in the centre of Delfshaven were demolished for the development of Rotterdam. Only after the bombardment of Rotterdam in the Second World War, Rotterdam realized the historical value of Delfshaven and declared the original historical city center a listed urban area that is to be preserved.
