Vluchtpaden in Buggenum

Het Maasdorp Buggenum werd tot voor kort regelmatig getroffen door overstromingen van de rivier. Om zich aan dit ongemak aan te passen hebben de bewoners een systeem van vluchtpaden aangelegd. Het padenstelsel kreeg voor het eerst cultuurhistorische erkenning toen een project hierover in 2000 de provinciale wedstrijd 'Erfgoed al goed' won. Aangemoedigd door deze erkenning vroeg de Stichting Buggenum door de Eeuwen Heen (SBddEh), samen met de Gemeente Haelen, in 2001 een Belvederesubsidie aan om de vluchtpaden voor de toekomst veilig te stellen. Nadat de subsidie was verkregen begon de Stichting Instandhouding Kleine Landschapselementen in Limburg (IKL) aan de restauratie. In dit artikel beschrijven we de belangrijkste resultaten van dat project en van het onderzoek dat daarvoor heeft plaatsgevonden'. Een interessante vraag was daarbij hoe bijzonder deze paden zijn.

A system of refuge paths in the village of Buggenum (province of Limburg, Netherlands)

The village of Buggenum is located in the Meuse Valley in Limburg. Although situated on a terrace, part of the village is flooded in case of high river water levels. For such situations, the population developed a system of refuge paths, to be able to flee to a higher part of the river terrace behind the village. The age of these paths is unclear, but they certainly existed at the beginning of the 19th century. Parts of this system of paths are still intact and even functioned when the levels of the river water became extremely high in the 1990s. A local initiative brought these paths under the attention of local and regional authorities.
