Groene Kerkterreinen: landschapselementen en identiteit.

Al sinds het einde van de jaren '90 van de vorige eeuw bestaat binnen het samenwerkingsverband Landschapsbeheer Nederland aandacht voor religieus erfgoed. Landschapsbeheer Groningen startte toen met het succesvolle project 'Kerken in het Groen', waarin samen met de Stichting Oude Groninger Kerken en lokale vrijwilligersgroepen vervallen groene kerkterreinen werden opgeknapt én nadien beheerd. Sindsdien is de aanpak van Groningen landelijk opgepakt. In dit artikel gaan we nader in op wat groene kerkterreinen zijn, wat de cultuurhistorische waarde ervan is en hoe het beheer en behoud voor de toekomst veilig gesteld kan worden. Om het beheer goed te organiseren, is het belang inzicht te krijgen in de aantallen terreinen in ons land. Ook moeten de betrokken bewoners goed begeleid worden bij het beheer van deze groene kerkterreinen.

Green churchyards: landscape elements and identity.

During the last 3 years Landschapsbeheer Nederland (a Dutch NGO for landscape management) has carried out a project in which small green churchyards - with or without cemeteries - were renovated with the help of volunteers, living in villages nearby. Supported by the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds (a foundation that supports cultural initiatives) an inventory was made of all Dutch churchyards and cemeteries, showing that there are around 7000 of these terrains. A substantial number of these suffer from a lack of maintenance. In several provinces churchyards were renovated. Interest of the media was overwhelming. We think the most important reason for that was the fact that in a global world, focus on the residential environment is growing more and more. Over the next years, the Cultuurfonds is planning to formulate a regulation for owners of churchyards and / or cemeteries to renovate the terrains with the help of volunteers. Landschapsbeheer Nederland will act as a consultant for approval.
