Is Gorinchem ontstaan vanuit een hofgebied?

Over de ontstaansgeschiedenis van het Zuid-Hollandse Gorinchem zijn vele verhandelingen geschreven, waarbij vooral aan de lokale heren van Arkel een grote rol wordt toebedeeld. Dit artikel behandelt de oudste fase van deze geschiedenis, het pre-Arkelse tijdperk. Geprobeerd wordt een oorspronkelijk hofgebied aan te wijzen en de mogelijke weerslag daarvan op de stadsstructuur te duiden. Bij gebrek aan concrete, geschreven berichten zal de historische geografie ons hierbij zeer ten dienste staan.

Did the town of Gorinchem (South-Holland) originate from a domain?

The Hoogland, on the levee of the river Linge between Arkel and the river Merwede, was reclaimed early on. From the Arkel-domain a new strip reclamation was added (the Slagen) to the west of the Hoogland. A new domain was founded on the southernmost parcels of the Hoogland, probably by the intervention of seigneur Van Goor, the prefect of Teisterbant and a confidant of the bishop of Utrecht (around 1018). This was the origin of the future town of Gorinchem. The domain area and the original parcelling of the south-western quadrant of the town let themselves be traced and reconstructed to a certain extent by, amongst others, a historical geographic approach.
