Cultuurlandschap en stedenbouw in balans?

Onlangs verscheen de Erfgoedbalans 2009, een publicatie van de Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed.* De Erfgoedbalans moet deel gaan uitmaken van de beleidscyclus van de rijksoverheid en past bij de groeiende aandacht - bij de overheid maar ook in de maatschappij - voor beleidsverantwoording. Erfgoed en de zorg daarvoor vanuit de overheid staan immers niet op zichzelf. Een aanzienlijk deel van de maatschappij is, direct of indirect, betrokken bij het erfgoed en draagt bij aan de instandhouding ervan.

Do historical cultural landscape and historical urban development balance each other?

The Dutch Heritage Review and Outlook 2009 presents an overall view of the position and the state of cultural heritage in the Netherlands. Different aspects of the categories 'archaeology', 'cultural landscapes' and 'built monuments' are considered, such as 'knowledge' or 'maintenance'. In this article some aspects of large-scale structures, such as cultural landscapes, historical urban development and landscape archaeology, are presented, concentrating upon 'knowledge' and 'stock'. It is striking that our knowledge of the younger period of our historical landscapes is inadequate. Furthermore, our knowledge of landscapes is not equally spread over the different types of landscape. For instance we lack integrated knowledge of substantial parts of our sandy landscapes. The absence of integrated studies is also striking with regard to the history of urbanism and the development of cities. An ongoing production of 'local' studies, like city monographs and atlases, seems to be coupled with a severe lack of comprehensive and synthetic studies.
