Historisch geografisch tijdschrift 25 (2007)4 - 14.
The geographic distribution of the country estates of Twente's textile industrialists, 1800 -1950.
During the 19th century the Dutch region of Twente witnessed the rise of a newly wealthy class: urban nouveaux riches, whose chief source of money lay in the growing textile trade. Despite the origins of their prosperity, many of these individuals chose to invest part of their wealth in landownership. The country estates established by Twente's industrialists were clustered around the eastern cities of Hengelo, 0ldenzaal and Enschede in which many of them made their fortunes. Elevated areas, associated with ridges pushed up by ice, proved especially popular locations. The explanation offered here for this popularity goes beyond the emphasis in previous studies on the physical characteristics of the land and landscape, and its location relative to urban centres. It is clear that changes in the land market - particularly the division and sale of former common land - and the social networks of estate owners had an influence upon the location of estates as well.
