Het Fort bij Vijfhuizen. Het eerste standaardfort uit de Stelling van Amsterdam (1880 - 1900).

De bouw van het Fort bij Vijfhuizen, gelegen langs de Ringvaart aan de westrand van de Haarlemmermeer, werd kort voor 1900 afgerond. Het fort maakt deel uit van de Stelling van Amsterdam, een waterlinie die werd aangelegd om de hoofdstad te beschermen. Het besluit om de Stelling van Amsterdam te realiseren was genomen in 1880. Daaraan waren decennia van discussie vooraf gegaan. Ook de aanleg van de stelling en de bouw van de bijbehorende forten had veel voeten in de aarde: deze nam bijna 35 jaar in beslag. Het Fort bij Vijfhuizen is bij uitstek geschikt om deze langdurige en fascinerende bouwgeschiedenis te vertellen omdat het als eerste - en niet zonder vallen en opstaan - werd voltooid. Als standaardfort diende het als voorbeeld voor de andere forten uit de Stelling van Amsterdam.

The Fortress at Vijfhuizen, the first standard fortress in the Defence Line of Amsterdam (1880 - 1900)

The Fortress at Vijfhuizen is part of the UNESCO-monument the 'Stelling van Amsterdam' (the Defence Line of Amsterdam), a complex of fortresses, dikes, locks and other structures, arranged in a large circle around the capital of Holland. In case of a military threat, the areas outside the circle could be inundated, while over forty fortresses protected strategic points where roads, rivers or dikes intersected the defence line. In this article, the stages in the planning and building of the Fortress at Vijfhuizen are reconstructed on the basis of a series of sketches, designs and ground plans frorn military archives. The planning started around 1880. Earthworks were constructed between 1889 and 1896. The concrete buildings were built in 1897 and 1898. It was the earliest fortress to be finished and therefore became the model - a standard - for the other fortresses in the Defence Line of Amsterdam that were built until 1914.
