Uitbreidingsplanologie voor dorpen in Noord--Brabant, 1930-1960. Dorpse retoriek.

De overwegend agrarische provincie Noord-Brabant maakte begin 20e eeuw als gevolg van de industrialisatie een snelle ontwikkeling door. Zo groeide Eindhoven vanwege de expansie van Philips in het eerste kwart van de 20e eeuw uit tot een stedelijke agglomeratie. Eindhoven werd een zelfstandig industriecentrum, dat een sterke invloed uitoefende op de aangrenzende plattelandsgemeenten. De regio verstedelijkte in snel tempo. Nieuwe woonwijken, wegen en fabrieksterreinen verschenen in het landschap. Met de Woningwet van 1931, die het intergemeentelijk streekplan mogelijk maakte, werd duidelijk dat de provincie een sturende rol had in de ruimtelijke ontwikkeling die met de industrialisatie gepaard ging. Om deze planvorming te ondersteunen werd door de provincie een streekplandienst opgezet, eerst ondergebracht bij de Dienst Gemeentewerken van de gemeente Eindhoven en vanaf 1935 opererend als zelfstandige dienst in Den Bosch.

Planning of expansion of the villages in the province of Noord-Brabant 1930-1960.

At the beginning of the 2oth century the province of Noord-Brabant rapidly developed from a rural area into an industrial one. As a result of a diversified industrialisation not only the cities, but also the rural villages grew. The Provinciale Planologische Dienst (Regional Authority for Urban and Regional Planning) tried to control the growth of these villages by drawing up development plans. Because the industrialisation threatened both the regional identity and the Roman Catholic character of the province a fierce debate on the expansion of the villages raged between the regional planner De Casseres and the regionalists. The biggest issues on which they disagreed were the role assigned to the church and the style of urban planning. Although the regionalists got their way with respect to their ideological plea to conserve the singularity ofthe villages, it turned out to be impossible to hold on to this concept in post war times. Urban planning issues played less decisive role in the growth of the Brabant villages than socio-economic ones. Against this background the plea flor singularity by the province was a rather rhetorical one.
