Koppelpoort: afsluiting of entree van Amersfoort?

Wie vanuit het noordoosten per trein station Amersfoort nadert, komt langs de Koppelpoort. Dit is een gecombineerde land- en waterpoort, die volledig voldoet aan het idee van een middeleeuwse stadspoort: torens, kantelen en smalle schietsleuven. De Koppelpoort vormde eeuwenlang de barrière tussen stad en platteland. Inmiddels heeft de stad de poort 'ingehaald'. Wat betekent dat voor de aan de binnenstad grenzende Eemhaven, nu grootschalige veranderingen op til zijn?

The river Eem leaves the medieval town of Amersfoort at the Koppelpoort (the water gate at the northern side of the old town). Many activities took place near this gate just outside the town, where the Eem was used as a small harbour. Now that large-scale redevelopment is in the offing, the historical situation may inspire the planning. The Eem and the Koppelpoort are dominant historical features on the spot. A new, urban meeting point on this site should incorporate both important structures.
