Bruinenburg: waar beek, liniedijk en kanaal elkaar kruisen.

De Bruinenburgersluis ligt op de plek waar de Lunterse Beek de liniedijk van de Grebbelinie kruist. De omgeving van de sluis vormt een complex en gelaagd landschap. Over en door het agrarische cultuurlandschap, dat vooral is gevormd door 12e-eeuwse broekontginningen, zijn in de loop van de tijd de Grebbelinie, de spoorlijn Amersfoort-Kesteren en het Valleikanaal aangelegd. Al deze elementen raken elkaar bij Bruinenburg.

Bruinenburg: an intersection of a stream, defence line and canal

Bruinenburg, to the southeast of Leusden, is the name of a lock that was built in 1786 as a part of the Grebbelinie defence system. The lock made it possible to use the water of a small stream, the Lunterse Beek, to inundate the fields on the eastern side for defensive purposes. The cultural landscape on the spot is highly complex, as the original medieval agrarian landscape not only is traversed by the line of defence, but also by a 19th-century railway and a 20th-century canal. In this article, which is the result of a workshop, the author advises to make the landscape history clear by accentuating the original stream and by making some information available on the scene.
