Heeft historische geografie een rol in het cultuurtoerisme in de stad? Mag historisch?geografisch erfgoed zich rekenen tot de marker van de stad of valt het buiten het toeristische beeld? Leren toeristen iets over de ruimtelijke samenhangen in de stad? Op deze vragen wordt in het onderstaande artikel, mede door voorbeelden uit Maastricht, een antwoord gegeven.

Historical geography and heritage tourism

This article is based on research on the position historical?geographical objects and structures hold in tourist images. Empirical evidence from Amersfoort, Enkhuizen and Maastricht shows that a historical?geographical perspective is only marginally present in tourist information. In the present article the important tourist and heritage town of Maastricht is used as a case?study. Most tourist information is characterised by fragmentation and a strong focus on individual buildings. Information on the spatial development of the town could add to the quality of heritage trails, as well as add to the possibilities for orientation. Historical?geographers in The Netherlands should use their enthusiasm and knowledge to interest heritage tourists for historical?geographical narratives and heritage.
