De vinkenbanen van de Hollandse buitenplaatsen

Nederland was vroeger een paradijs voor vogelvangers. Van de zangvogels waren het vooral de vinken die eraan moesten geloven. Veel buitenplaatsen aan de binnenduinrand van Holland hadden een vinkenbaan, waar in de herfst duizenden vinken werden buitgemaakt. Deze vinkenbanen fungeerden als trefpunten van de elite, te vergelijken met de golfbanen van tegenwoordig.

The finching yards of the Dutch country estates

In the autumn large quantities of Scandinavian finches migrate to their hibernation areas in Great Britain and Ireland. On the way they pass the dunes along the Dutch west coast. Capturing finches was a favourite pastime on 17th and 18th century country estates in the coastal region. The finching yards of the country estates were important meeting points of the elite. In the second half of the 18th century finching on the country estates reached its greatest popularity. The decline of this pastime was caused by several ecological and social developments, such as the reclamation of the Haarlemmermeer (1848?1852), the rise of the animal protection movement and the introduction of new outdoor sports, especially golf and tennis.
