De Duin- en Bollenstreek: een cultuurhistorische 'schatkamer'

Temidden van de drukte van de Randstad ligt de Duin- en Bollenstreek. Dit is een uitgestrekt, open en landelijk gebied tussen Leiden en Haarlem waar circa 175.000 mensen wonen op een oppervlakte die slechts 0,6 % van Nederland bedraagt. De streek is het centrum van de Nederlandse bloembollencultuur. Tot in de verste uithoeken van de wereld is de Keukenhof als visitekaartje van het Nederlanse bollen- en bloemenvak bekend. Bij het jaarlijkse bloemencorso - het grootste oogstfeest ter wereld - staan meer dan een miljoen mensen langs de route. Vanwege de nadruk op de bloembollencultuur is de cultuurhistorische betekenis van de Duin- en Bollanstreek onderbelicht gebleven.

The Dune and Bulb Area, a cultural-historical 'treasury'.

The Dune- and Bulb Region (provinces North- and South Holland, The Netherlands) is a rural area located between Leyden and Haarlem, situated on the west flank of the Randstad. This particular region is unique, in both national and international respects because of the many cultural-historical elements that remain perfectly intact in many places. The cultural-historical quality of the Dune and Bulb Region is curently under pressure due to the constantly ongoing levelling of the landscape. Plans for new housing developments are made in order to accomodate the overflowing population from the Randstad (Bollenstad = Bulbtown). To ensure that the renovation of this part of the country is done correctly, a Landscape Policy for the Dune and Bulb Region has been drawn up. The activities which come under this Policy are mainly focused on the restoration aspects of exceptional landscape values which have give the Dune and Bulb Region its unique character and charm.
